Tragic Loss of Five Indian Army Personnel in Ladakh Flash Floods

On Saturday, June 29, 2024, a somber incident unfolded in the Daulat Beg Oldie area of eastern Ladakh, near the Line of Actual Control with China. Five valiant soldiers of the Indian Army lost their lives in a flash flood while their tank attempted to cross a river during a routine drill.

The victims included four jawans and one junior commissioned officer (JCO), who were navigating the T-72 tank across the Nyoma-Chushul river as part of their exercise. However, a sudden surge in water levels caught them off guard, causing the tank to sink.

Initial reports indicate that the incident occurred due to unexpected and rapid rainfall in the area. The swift-moving currents proved too powerful for the tank and its occupants. All five soldiers were swept away in the deluge.

Upon receiving the tragic news, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh expressed his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. We mourn the loss of our brave soldiers, who served our nation with utmost dedication, he stated, adding that the nation stands firm with the families during this time of grief.

Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi echoed these sentiments, paying tribute to the martyred soldiers and expressing his deepest sympathy to their loved ones. We honor their sacrifice and stand with their families in this hour of sorrow, he said.

Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge described the incident as a painful tragedy and offered his condolences to the affected families.

The Indian Army has confirmed that all five bodies have been recovered, and an investigation has been initiated to ascertain the precise circumstances surrounding the mishap.

In recent days, parts of Ladakh and Himachal Pradesh have experienced heavy rainfall, leading to landslides and disruptions in several areas. Landslides have also been reported in Shimla, Kullu, and Kinnaur districts, resulting in traffic disruptions and property damage.

The loss of these brave soldiers serves as a solemn reminder of the risks and challenges faced by those who serve in the Indian Army. Their sacrifice will not be forgotten, and their memory will continue to inspire future generations of soldiers.
