On July 7, 2024, BCCI's Jay Shah announced the appointment of Gautam Gambhir as the Head Coach of the Indian men's cricket team. This appointment was anticipated, with IndiaToday.in confirming Gambhir's expected takeover from Rahul Dravid in May.

Gambhir's coaching experience may be limited, but his remarkable performances as a mentor in the IPL appear to have convinced the BCCI. His tenure with Lucknow in 2022, where he guided the franchise to the playoffs under Andy Flower, and his successful stint with KKR in 2024, where he oversaw their third IPL triumph, showcased his capabilities.

Gambhir's leadership and ability to instill a sense of collective purpose within the team were widely praised by players, support staff, and co-owner Shah Rukh Khan.

We are delighted to have Mr. Gautam Gambhir as the new Head Coach of the Indian Cricket Team, said Jay Shah in a tweet. His experience and vision make him the ideal person to lead Team India.

The Indian team is currently engaged in a T20I series against Zimbabwe under the mentorship of VVS Laxman. Gambhir is expected to take over from the Sri Lanka series, which commences on July 27 and concludes on August 7.
