Prime Minister Sharif Allocates PKR 23 Billion to Address Turmoil in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir
In the wake of escalating tensions and protests in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK), Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has authorized the immediate disbursement of PKR 23 billion to the region, signaling a concerted effort to address simmering grievances.
The allocation of funds follows a series of violent clashes between protesters and law enforcement, sparked by the Jammu Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee's (JAAC) demands for reforms, including fair electricity pricing, subsidized wheat flour, and an end to elite privileges. The unrest, which began with the arrest of approximately 70 activists on May 9 and 10, has left casualties and injuries in its wake.
Recognizing the gravity of the situation, Prime Minister Sharif convened a special meeting in Islamabad, attended by PoJK Prime Minister Chaudhry Anwarul Haq, local ministers, and key political figures. Federal ministers and coalition leaders also participated in the meeting, conducting a comprehensive assessment of the situation and devising a plan to address the protesters' grievances.
The decision to allocate funds was met with appreciation from PoJK leaders, who lauded the swift response of the federal government. Speaking at a press conference, PoJK Prime Minister Chaudhry Anwarul Haq hailed the aid package as a testament to the government's commitment to the region's well-being.
Highlighting the financial challenges faced by PoJK, Haq disclosed the allocation of PKR 10 billion from the Social Protection Fund to the PoJK Bank, a move aimed at addressing critical financial needs. Key provisions of the aid package include subsidized electricity tariffs and fixed prices for wheat flour, aimed at easing the financial burdens shouldered by residents. Haq assured that notifications had been issued to implement these measures promptly.
Emphasizing the significance of the aid, Haq assured that the relief would be a permanent fixture in the region's budget, providing long-term benefits to the populace. Haq highlighted the collaborative effort among coalition parties, underscoring a shared commitment to regional development and prosperity.
In response to queries, Haq confirmed financial assistance for the family of the slain sub-inspector and unveiled tariff structures approved by PoJK authorities for domestic and commercial users.
