After the resounding success of Ghilli's re-release, three of Ajith Kumar's films graced the silver screen on a single day. Dheena (2001), Billa (2007), and Mankatha (2011) made a simultaneous comeback, igniting nostalgia among fans.
Despite the simultaneous releases, the trio managed to rake in an impressive Rs. 2 crore worldwide. Dheena led the charge in India, amassing approximately Rs. 75 lakhs, primarily driven by Tamil Nadu's contribution of Rs. 70 lakhs. This achievement marked the second-highest first-day collection for a Tamil re-release in the state, just shy of Ghilli's staggering Rs. 4.25 crore last week.
Billa followed closely with approximately Rs. 55 lakhs in India. Notably, it garnered a portion of its earnings from outside Tamil Nadu, with Karnataka contributing approximately Rs. 15 lakhs.
Mankatha found success solely in overseas markets, generating approximately Rs. 85 lakhs (USD 100K), with significant contributions from Malaysia and France, each contributing USD 20K.
Although each film had a loyal following, rights complications hindered their full-fledged global release. However, a more strategic launch could have potentially yielded between Rs. 2.50-3 crore worldwide.
In comparison, Ghilli had a remarkable debut last week, grossing an exceptional Rs. 7.50 crore on its opening day, with an additional Rs. 80 lakhs from a delayed release in the United Kingdom and Norway. Its impressive momentum has sustained, amassing a total gross of Rs. 30 crore to date, with projections of surpassing Rs. 35 crore.
While Dheena and Billa witnessed a decline in collections in Tamil Nadu today, they may be unlikely to match Ghilli's extended theatrical run. Nonetheless, the simultaneous release of three Ajith Kumar classics provided a cinematic feast for fans, rekindling memories and showcasing his enduring stardom.
