Maidaan, directed by Amit Ravindernath Sharma and featuring Ajay Devgn, Priyamani, and Gajraj Rao, has concluded its global theatrical run with a modest worldwide gross of approximately Rs 70 crores. Despite a release over a month ago, the film is unlikely to surpass Rs 72 crores in lifetime gross, a concerning result given its sizable production budget.
The producers of Maidaan initially feared even lower returns based on the film's opening day performance during Eid. However, the lack of significant new releases and positive word-of-mouth have helped Maidaan recoup some of its losses.
Domestically, Maidaan has netted around Rs 50 crores, while its international earnings stand at approximately 1 million dollars or Rs 8.50 crores. The film's overall performance resembles that of a low-budget, well-received movie, despite its substantial budget, which required a stronger opening to achieve profitability.
The protracted production of Maidaan, dating back to 2019, may have contributed to its unenthusiastic reception. Audiences have shown a preference for recently produced content in the post-pandemic era, which may have affected the film's box office performance.
Coincidentally, Maidaan shared its release date with Bade Miyan Chote Miyan. While Bade Miyan Chote Miyan initially had a stronger opening, Maidaan gradually gained ground. The final difference in gross earnings between the two films is expected to be around Rs 32 crores, with Bade Miyan Chote Miyan grossing Rs 104 crores and Maidaan grossing Rs 72 crores.
With a theatrical share of around Rs 30 crores and non-theatrical rights estimated to be sold around Rs 100 crores, the producers of Maidaan face potential losses of approximately Rs 100 crores against a budget exceeding Rs 200 crores. Renegotiation of talent fees in their favor may provide some relief.
