Cannes Director Addresses Media Concerns
Thierry Fremaux, the director of the upcoming Cannes Film Festival, recently addressed media inquiries ahead of the opening night. Fremaux primarily expressed concerns over the undue focus on controversies rather than the cinematic merit of the selected films, a trend he attributes to the expansion of cinema's global reach.
Handling Controversies
During a press conference on Monday, Fremaux acknowledged the festival's preparedness to manage potential fallout or abusive comments during movie premieres. He noted that in the past, the primary concern was audience reception of the films, but with the advent of a more international audience, opinions have become more diverse and potentially disruptive.
Emphasis on Cinematic Excellence
Fremaux emphasized that the films chosen for the festival were selected solely on the basis of their artistic prowess, irrespective of their potential to convey important messages. He reiterated that the cinematic experience should be the primary focus, rather than external controversies.
Strike Concerns
Fremaux also addressed reports of a potential strike by festival workers, aiming to disrupt events from May 14-25 in France. He stated that the festival management has been in contact with the workers and is actively working with them to prevent any disruption of the event. Everyone wants to avoid a strike, he affirmed.
