Riding high on the success of his directorial debut, Madgaon Express, actor-filmmaker Kunal Kemmu revealed a compelling reason behind leaving the film's climax unwritten. Kemmu, who penned the screenplay and took the helm of the project, believed that the climax should align with the director's vision and sensibilities.
In an exclusive interview with Pinkvilla, Kemmu elaborated on his decision. Initially, I did write a part for myself, but I never wrote the climax because I wanted to tailor it to the director's style, he explained.
This approach stemmed from Kemmu's desire to leave room for the director's creative interpretation. He envisioned the climax as a fluid element that could be shaped according to the director's unique storytelling approach.
When I got the opportunity to direct it, I reflected on my initial concept, Kemmu continued. I had a particular climax in mind, which I shared with them, and they were receptive to it.
Regarding the casting process, Kemmu expressed his satisfaction with the final ensemble cast. I made quick decisions, and the cast we have on screen is exactly what I had in mind, he said.
Despite the film's critical and commercial success, Kemmu downplayed the possibility of casting A-list stars. Our conversation never went that way, he clarified. I didn't know if stars would align to fit into this world.
We didn't envision a grand scale for the film from the outset, Kemmu added.
Currently, Madgaon Express boasts an impressive IMDb rating of 7.5/10, further cementing its status as a well-received cinematic endeavor.
