The Gujarati horror-comedy film Jhamkudi, directed by Umang Vyas and starring Manasi Parekh and Viraj Ghelani, has enjoyed remarkable success at the box office. In its first four days of release, the film has amassed an impressive Rs 3.35 crores nett in India, making it the highest-grossing Gujarati film in that time frame since 3 Ekka in 2023.
Upon its release on Cinema Lovers Day (May 31, 2024), Jhamkudi garnered a strong opening day collection of Rs 70 lakhs, benefiting from reduced ticket prices of Rs 99 for standard formats. It maintained its momentum on Saturday despite the return to regular ticket prices. The film's third day marked its first single-day collection exceeding Rs 1 crore, propelling the weekend total to Rs 3.35 crores nett.
The positive audience response to Jhamkudi was evident in its Monday collections, which held steady despite being slightly lower than Friday and Saturday. The Monday figures surpassed the highest single-day collections of other notable Gujarati films released in 2024, such as Itta Kitta and Kasoombo.
The film's promising box office performance indicates a strong potential for an extended theatrical run and a possible double-digit lifetime gross.
Set against the backdrop of Navratri celebrations in Gujarat, Jhamkudi follows the story of the village of Raniwada, where garba dancing is forbidden due to the curse of an evil witch named Jhamkudi. When the rules are broken, haunting activities resume, and Bablo, a cunning real estate agent, and Kumud, an NRI heir of the royal family, must confront the witch's wrath.
Jhamkudi is currently playing in select theaters across India.
