Helly Shah, renowned for her captivating performances on the silver screen, recently marked her OTT debut with the fourth season of the beloved series, Gullak. However, prior to this triumphant return, Shah had notably absented herself from the limelight for a significant three-year period, her last on-screen appearance being in Ishq Mein Marjawan 2. This extended hiatus, the longest in her acting career that began in her teenage years, was a deliberate choice, as Shah sought a much-needed respite from the relentless demands of her profession.
Reflecting on her decision, Shah candidly admits that the initial transition was far from effortless. Mentally, I was resolute and convinced myself that it was the right path, but emotionally, it was an arduous journey, she confides. Self-doubt crept in, and I questioned my actions. My mother would express her bewilderment at my reluctance to accept new projects, and acquaintances would often voice their perplexity. Yet, amidst the uncertainties and the void left by my absence from the screen, I knew deep within me that I needed this time to rediscover and redefine myself.
Shah emphasizes that her hiatus was not driven by financial constraints, but rather by a profound need for personal growth and exploration. When you're actively involved in a show, you can anticipate a steady stream of income, she explains. Relinquishing that financial security after years of uninterrupted work was undoubtedly challenging.
While she may have been absent from the public eye, Shah assures that she remained actively engaged in her craft during her hiatus. She eagerly anticipates the release of several projects that were meticulously crafted during this transformative period, including her film Kaya Palat, which was unveiled at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival in 2022.
Regarding the delay in Kaya Palat's release, Shah clarifies that the film was always intended as an independent production tailored for the festival circuit. Following its premiere at Cannes, the filmmakers showcased it at various other festivals, and we are optimistic about its release later this year, she reveals.
Shah's presence at Cannes, as one of the first Indian television actors to grace the festival after Hina Khan, sparked a lively debate on the evolving nature of the event. Influencers undoubtedly garner significant attention and engagement, observes Shah. However, I can't help but feel that the exclusivity associated with Cannes has somewhat diminished. While I believe that everyone possesses talent and deserves recognition, the sheer volume of attendees has perhaps diluted the festival's allure.
