Green Lantern Series Coming to HBO: John Stewart and Hal Jordan to Take Center Stage

HBO has given the green light to a new Green Lantern series focusing on the iconic characters John Stewart and Hal Jordan from DC Comics.

Development History

The latest adaptation of the Green Lantern mythology has been in development for over five years, with producer Greg Berlanti initially leading the project. Berlanti's original concept centered on Guy Gardner and Alan Scott as the main protagonists.

Creative Overhaul and New Direction

In 2022, the series underwent a significant creative overhaul, resulting in the departure of writer and showrunner Seth Grahame-Smith. This shift paved the way for John Stewart, DC Comics' first Black superhero, to become the focal point of the story.

John Stewart: DC's First Black Superhero

John Stewart is the Green Lantern of New Earth and the third individual to wield the power ring after Hal Jordan and Alan Scott. He is a prominent member of the Justice League of America, making his first appearance in Green Lantern #87.

Showrunner and Creative Team

The eight-episode drama series will be helmed by showrunner Chris Mundy (Ozark), who will co-write with Damon Lindelof (Watchmen, Lost). Eisner Award-winning writer Tom King, known for his work on Batman and Supergirl comics, will also contribute to the show's narrative.

Alignment with DC Studios' New Universe

The reimagined Green Lantern series aligns with the vision of James Gunn and Peter Safran, the newly appointed co-heads of DC Studios. Their mission is to establish a cohesive universe across film and television, elevating Green Lantern as a cornerstone of this expanded narrative.

HBO's Enthusiasm

Casey Bloys, chairman and CEO of HBO and Max Content, expressed excitement about Lanterns joining the HBO lineup. The series will be produced by Warner Bros. Television in collaboration with DC Studios.

Executive Producers and Writers

Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King will serve as executive producers and writers for the series, shaping the story of these iconic Green Lanterns and their pivotal role in the DC Universe.
