India Awaits Details from Canadian Police on Indian Nationals' Arrests in Khalistani Activist's Murder

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has indicated that India will await information from Canadian authorities regarding the arrests of three Indian nationals in connection with the murder of Khalistani activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar last year.

Jaishankar acknowledged news of the detentions, stating that the suspects allegedly have gang connections in India. He emphasized that India expects the Canadian police to provide details and expressed concern over organized crime from India, particularly Punjab, operating in Canada.

Canadian Police Nab Suspects in Nijjar's Murder

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) apprehended Karanpreet Singh, 28, Kamalpreet Singh, 22, and Karan Brar, 22, on Friday. All three, residing in Edmonton, Alberta, face charges of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder. They have been in the country for several years.

RCMP Superintendent Mandeep Mooker stated at a press conference that they are investigating possible ties between the suspects and the Indian government.

Indian High Commission Seeks Updates on Arrests

India's High Commissioner to Canada, Sanjay Verma, expressed hope that the Indian consulate will receive regular updates from Canadian authorities on the detained individuals. However, he clarified that the issue falls within Canada's internal affairs, and India refrains from commenting.

Jaishankar Attributes NijjarKilling to Canada's Internal Politics

Addressing the matter at a separate event, Jaishankar attributed the events surrounding Nijjar's killing to Canada's internal political dynamics. He stated that a pro-Khalistan lobby has emerged in Canada, wielding significant influence in the political arena.

Jaishankar emphasized India's efforts to dissuade Canada from providing legitimacy to pro-Khalistan elements. However, he added that the Canadian government has not adequately addressed India's extradition requests for 25 individuals, predominantly pro-Khalistan supporters.

Lack of Cooperation from Canadian Authorities

The External Affairs Minister highlighted Canada's lack of cooperation on specific cases, citing a failure to provide evidence or facilitate collaboration between police agencies. He suggested that Canada's political compulsions, particularly in the lead-up to elections, may be influencing its stance towards India.

Diplomatic Tensions over Nijjar's Assassination

Nijjar's murder has strained diplomatic relations between Canada and India. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau expressed concerns about potential Indian government involvement, which New Delhi strongly refuted. India has consistently denied any involvement in the incident.
