After a five-month incarceration in Birsa Munda Central Jail, Hemant Soren, who was granted bail in connection with a money laundering case on June 28, is poised to reclaim his position as Jharkhand's Chief Minister. The change in leadership was unanimously agreed upon by MLAs and leaders of the INDIA coalition, according to sources who spoke to India Today.
Champai Soren is expected to submit his resignation as Jharkhand's Chief Minister by 8 p.m., the sources indicated. The meeting of the INDIA bloc took place at the Chief Minister's residence in Ranchi. Hemant Soren will take the oath as Jharkhand's Chief Minister for the third time, becoming the state's 13th chief minister since its separation from Bihar in 2000.
Discussions are also underway to offer Champai Soren a new role as chairman of the UPA coordination committee and working president of JMM. Along with Hemant Soren's brother Basant and wife Kalpana, Congress's Jharkhand in-charge Ghulam Ahmad Mir and its state president Rajesh Thakur were present at the meeting of the INDIA bloc.
Meanwhile, in a social media post, BJP MP Nishikant Dubey set the tone for the party's offensive, declaring that the Champai Soren era is over in Jharkhand. Criticizing JMM for its familial focus, he remarked, In the family-centric party, people outside the family have no political future. I wish the Chief Minister would draw inspiration from Bhagwan Birsa Munda and challenge the corrupt Hemant Soren ji.
Champai Soren, a 67-year-old seasoned JMM leader, has worked alongside party founder and Hemant Soren's father, Shibu Soren, for decades.
