Union Minister Smriti Irani questioned the legitimacy of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's challenge for a public debate with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, casting doubt on Gandhi's suitability and stature.

Irani, the BJP candidate for Amethi, raised concerns about Gandhi's qualifications, particularly in light of his reluctance to face a normal BJP worker in his own constituency. She also questioned whether Gandhi possessed the necessary authority to engage in a debate with Prime Minister Modi.

Addressing the issue, Irani remarked, Firstly, the person who lacks the courage to contest against an ordinary BJP worker in his supposed stronghold should refrain from making exaggerated claims. Secondly, who desires to engage in a debate with PM Modi at his elevated level? I would like to inquire whether he is the prime ministerial candidate of the 'Gathbandhan' bloc.

Gandhi, who is contesting from Wayanad in Kerala and Raebareli in Uttar Pradesh, had accepted an invitation for a public debate with Modi on the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. The invitation was extended by a group of former judges and a senior journalist.

Gandhi stated that such a debate would allow voters to understand our respective visions and make an informed choice. He also confirmed that either he or Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge would participate.

Irani further criticized Kharge for raising concerns over the voter turnout data released by the Election Commission. She accused the Congress party of attempting to undermine the credibility of the poll body.

Congress speaks of counting the wealth of the people but has demonstrated a willingness to confiscate half of the citizens' property. They advocate reversing the decision on Ram Temple. These are all national issues on which every citizen, not just the PM, has the right to express their opinion, she asserted.

Irani's remarks highlight the ongoing political sparring between the BJP and the Congress ahead of the crucial Lok Sabha elections.
