On Tuesday, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar addressed the ongoing unrest in Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (POK), drawing a stark contrast between the experiences of its inhabitants and those living in Jammu and Kashmir.
Speaking at an event in Kolkata, Jaishankar remarked that the recent turmoil in POK highlights a growing disparity in the lives of people residing on either side of the Line of Control. He opined that those living in POK cannot help but compare their situation to their counterparts in Jammu and Kashmir, who have witnessed significant progress in various spheres.
They (people in POK) recognize the stark difference in treatment and opportunities, the sense of occupation and discrimination they endure, Jaishankar asserted.
He further emphasized India's unwavering claim over POK, stating, It has always been an integral part of India and will always remain so. Jaishankar acknowledged that the issue of POK had not received much attention until the abrogation of Article 370, which had previously granted special status to Jammu and Kashmir.
The recent protests in POK stem from widespread discontent over rising costs of living and perceived injustices. Videos circulating on social media depict confrontations between locals and security forces, with some protesters even chanting slogans of Azadi (freedom) against Pakistan.
In an attempt to quell the unrest, Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif approved the release of funds for power and wheat subsidies in POK. However, protests have continued unabated.
Jaishankar's comments underscore India's commitment to reclaiming POK, a position supported by all major political parties. He highlighted the growing discontent among the people of POK and their longing for a better future, a future that lies within the embrace of India.
