Kanhaiya Kumar, the Lok Sabha candidate from North East Delhi for the Congress party, faced an alarming attack during an election campaign in his constituency on Friday. Under the false pretense of honoring him with a garland, a group of assailants brutally attacked Kumar. The incident, which occurred near the AAP office in Kartar Nagar, also saw inappropriate behavior directed at Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) woman councillor Chhaya Gaurav Sharma.
According to Sharma's complaint to the police, the miscreants snatched away her shawl and threatened her husband while throwing black ink into the crowd, injuring several individuals, including three to four women.
The assault unfolded as Kumar emerged from the AAP office following a meeting with Sharma. The police report indicates that after the meeting, as Sharma escorted Kumar, a group approached him and placed a garland around him. However, the situation swiftly turned violent as the individuals proceeded to throw ink at Kumar and attempted to assault him. When Sharma intervened to protect Kumar, she too faced mistreatment and threats.
The North East Deputy Commissioner of Police acknowledged the incident and confirmed that Sharma had filed a complaint, stating that the appropriate legal actions were being initiated.
Kumar, the representative of the INDIA bloc, is vying for the North East Delhi seat against Manoj Tiwari of the BJP.
This unprovoked attack on Kumar, a vocal and prominent figure in Indian politics, has raised concerns about the safety of candidates during the ongoing election season.
