Pune Porsche Crash: Outrage Over Bail Granted to Teen Accused of Killing Two
The Commissioner of Police in Pune, Amitesh Kumar, has strongly condemned the bail granted to a 17-year-old son of a real estate developer who allegedly killed two individuals by recklessly driving his sports car while intoxicated. The incident has sparked widespread outrage, with many questioning the leniency shown to the accused.
Commissioner Calls for Adult Trial
In a statement to India Today TV, Commissioner Kumar asserted that the accused should be tried as an adult due to the severity of the crime, which falls under the definition of a heinous offense as per the Juvenile Justice Act. He expressed disappointment that the court had denied his application to treat the accused as an adult.
Bail Granted Despite Serious Crime
The teen was granted bail by a local court within 14 hours, despite the grave nature of the crime. The court reasoned that the offense was not serious enough to warrant the denial of bail. Additionally, he was released on certain conditions, including writing an essay on the consequences of road accidents.
Swift Action by Police
The police swiftly apprehended the teen and two other individuals who were present in the Porsche. However, the accused was released on bail within a short period, despite the police's efforts to have him treated as an adult.
Outpour of Anger
The bail granted to the teen has sparked outrage among the public. Akhilesh Awadhiya, the uncle of one of the victims, expressed fury at the ridiculous bail conditions, criticizing the Maharashtra Police for not taking appropriate action. He denounced the accused as a human bomb who posed a grave threat to society.
Further Legal Proceedings
The police have appealed the court's decision to grant bail and have vowed to exhaust all legal avenues to prove the severity of the crime. The accused's lawyer has asserted that they will present their case based on the merits of the law.
Ongoing Investigations
The investigation into the incident continues, with the police pursuing charges against the accused's father and the bar that served him alcohol under the Juvenile Justice Act. The outcome of the legal proceedings and the final disposition of the case remain to be determined.
