Preliminary Investigations Point to Human Error
Railway Board Chairman and CEO Jaya Varma Sinha announced the completion of rescue operations and revealed preliminary investigation findings suggesting human error as the cause of the accident. The driver of the goods train allegedly disregarded a signal, leading to the collision.
Victims Include Train Crew
The driver of the goods train, his assistant, and the guard of the Kanchanjunga Express were among the fatalities. The injured victims were swiftly transported to a nearby hospital, where medical attention is being provided.
Financial Assistance for Victims
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences and announced financial aid of Rs 2 lakh to the families of the deceased and Rs 50,000 to those injured from the Prime Minister's Relief Fund (PMNRF). Additionally, Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw tweeted financial assistance of Rs 10 lakh to the bereaved families, Rs 2.5 lakh for those grievously injured, and Rs 50,000 for those sustaining minor injuries.

An emergency medical team was dispatched to the accident scene, and rescue operations were conducted efficiently. Divisional railway manager (DRM) of North Frontier Railway's Katihar division confirmed the number of fatalities, which rose from an initial count of five.
